MEDIA HORA

If you know me well at all, even just thru these postings, you will know what a magical effect Spain has on me...it's a playground of many pleasures, and I fit right in to the lifestyle. So I have little to say this week except--REM's shows have been great fun....I've been nailing the tennis daily (very sore thighs as a result)...looking for partners on this tour as usual...and eating like a king. Some of my favorite Spanish things--morcilla, jamon pata negra, and an abundance of clay courts. Viva EspaƱa yet again.

Yesterday my daughter turned a year old...unf. I had to deliver the happy birthday song over the phone...and today is mother's day in France, had to phone it in again as well.

Thank you to all my tennis partners here in Spain--Annmarie, Rosemarie, Javier and Marcos--

Anyone who can play, please write in....

PLAYING PRIVATELY

Our show at SIFF's private launch party was...in an abandoned office building downtown, but so freshly abandoned i think it was downright spooky. We seemed to pull it off. I've been in spain now for over 24 hours, having arrived to start the REM tour...having trouble not enjoying the sun, the wine, and the 18 hours I slept from the time I boarded a plane in seattle, thru the layover in London, on board the flight to malaga, and in my cozy hotel room.

today I viewed a bullfight. I was somewhat numbed by the event, even hypnotized. I felt like humans were still exacting revenge for all the time we spent as prey, tho' it's been somewhat over for 5,000 years...but, we humans can hold a grudge for a long, long time...

POSIES TOUR SHAPES

Several dates of the Posies summer tour are announced by the various venues/festivals; I am waiting until things are fully announced from beginning to end beofore I post them on this site. But, suffice to say we will be touring in July and August in Europe, and plan on a North American tour starting in early September.

Rehearsals and preparations continue; I think you should start seeing press on this record soon. The Posies new album, Every Kind of Light, is to be released by Rykodisc worldwide the week of June 27.

This weeeeek was spent in rehearsal mode yet again.

the Posies will play a reception for the Seattle Film Festival on July 19 in Seattle. For information, go to

GETTING UP...TO EARLY SPEED

The Posies ran thru a set of freshly rehearsed catalogue and new material at the Nightlight Lounge in Bellingham (our hometown) on Saturday...and while I will admit we had to juggle so much new information that we couldn't possibly break the bounds of self-consciousness, we made it to the end and realized that next time we'll play at 120 db instead of 140. Live and learn. Before the show we had a raucous visit to KUGS, the fantastic station at Western Wa. Univ., the first station to play KS music of any kind (my high school band the Genetic Defects). Today we also enjoyed a photo shoot with the lovely David Belisle, who I spend time on tour with often as he works with REM as an assistant to the band and photographer to boot. There are many fine examples of his work in the Photos section of KS.calm.

On a personal note, I spent mother's day at my mom's house completely miserable in bed with some kind of food poisoning (not from my mom's cooking!) and missed the party. I got up long enough to buy flowers and fill her gas tank!

I spent much of today thinking I had lost my brand new perscription shades, that I had just picked up from my beloved optometrists, SPEX in Seattle. I am getting GPS chips to glue to every pair of glasses I own this week. They were at the bottom of my bag. In a tennis shoe. In their case, of course.

THE QUIET NORTH

I could say it's been a quiet week...but that'd be a crock. Posies have been rehearsing daily, incorporating new and long-dormant material for upcoming performances. This Saturday we will be performing at the Nightlight in Bellingham USA, our home ville. (they haven't put up the May calendar yet). We Posies have also been hard at work putting together artwork and other concerns for the new rec. Plus, I have an 11 month old daughter. So, no, it's not been quiet, it's been brilliant. Just no travelogue this week. BFH!
